Yoga as a lifestyle:<3
In very simple terms, Yoga is a system, a discipline, by which you bring balance to both body and mind. Yoga consists in the physical part - postures, called asanas, breathing exercises, called Pranayama, in meditation, philosophy and a lifestyle based on compassion, kindness, empathy.
In the West, Yoga tends to focus, for the most part, only on postures, on asanas. Asanas are a very good start, they help you physically, they bring you closer to yourself, but as you develop this practice, there are many more things to discover, because Yoga is something very complex.
Yes, in most cases, Yoga is highly recommended and even beneficial during pregnancy. It helps both the psyche, bringing balance and calmness, and the physical, helping the wrists, tendons, joints, muscles - basically it prepares the whole body for the period of pregnancy, as well as for birth and the postpartum period.
Before starting any physical activity, however, expectant mothers must ensure that there are no medical restrictions/contraindications. It is also important for the Yoga teacher to know if the mother-to-be has practiced Yoga before pregnancy or not/what is the level of practice and if she will choose to attend a regular Yoga class where it will not only be pregnant women , the Yoga teacher will adapt the exercises so that there is no risk. Otherwise, pregnant women can attend prenatal yoga classes.
Yes! Yes! Yes! 🙂 Yoga is for every body and every age. As you practice Yoga, your level of mobility, flexibility, strength, increases. There are yoga classes for beginners or if you go to an intermediate level yoga class, the Yoga teacher has the duty to adapt each exercise to each person, if necessary.
There are many types of Yoga and many teaching styles, so it is recommended to try several types of Yoga and sometimes several teachers, until you feel you have found your place.
In addition to the physical benefits - improves mobility, flexibility, increases endurance and strength, Yoga also brings many benefits on the mental/emotional side - you become more attentive to your body, to what you feel in your body, you become more attentive to your emotions, to the way certain postures/situations/people make you feel - in short - Yoga brings you closer to the best version of you!
Even if you only practice once a week, you will still see results. The results and benefits appear even after a short practice, of 10-20 minutes/day when you don't have time. You can try to practice 2-3 times a week if possible or even every day.
To practice Yoga, you don't need expensive clothes or expensive equipment. Clothes should be as loose as possible, allow you to move freely and preferably, as breathable as possible, made of natural materials. If you start practicing yoga at home, you don't necessarily need a yoga mat, you can choose a mat, carpet/non-stick surface. If you go to a Yoga studio, you will find all the necessary equipment there - Yoga mat, Yoga bricks/elastic bands, etc.
You can do Yoga whenever your time allows, but the most recommended is to start your day with Yoga, because we wake up stiff, numb and practicing in the morning, the whole day we will feel energetic, balanced. Also, there are certain asanas that bring a lot of peace to the body and mind, recommended for evening practice.
It is not recommended to eat food at least one hour before Yoga (if you only practice the meditation part of Yoga, then it is ok). The ideal time would be 2 hours, but some people have very fast digestion.
Why is it not recommended? Because the food will either remain undigested and you will not feel well at the end of the session (the energy will no longer be in the stomach to digest, but will move to the body), or you risk that the food will go up to the throat, because most Yoga classes include half-inversions (eg downward facing dog). If you still feel like you have no energy at all and are hungry, a banana would be fine.
After the Yoga session it is okay to eat.
There are some people, myself included, who choose to do Yoga during menstruation because it helps a lot, especially when dealing with period pain, hormones, etc., but inversions (eg headstand/handstand) are completely not recommended for the first 3-4 days, because the blood flow full of toxins must stay down, flow out of the body, not go up/ stagnate in the body.
Depending on your preferences or level of practice, in the first few days it is recommended to practice less demanding asanas and avoid trunk twists (they put a lot of pressure on the abdomen, where energy is very high during menstruation anyway). If the level of practice is advanced, then you will know very well exactly which asanas are beneficial for you during menstruation.
Yoga is recommended and beneficial in many medical conditions, and not only conditions, but also more delicate situations, such as pregnancy, depressive periods, etc.
If the medical condition consists of: recent operations, fractures, sprains, etc., and you are a beginner or do not know exactly whether it is good to practice and what asanas you can practice, then I recommend that you first talk to an experienced Yoga teacher or a physiotherapist / physiotherapist, who knows exactly what movements or asanas to avoid.
I personally do not recommend anyone to start Yoga alone at home, unless the teacher also provides pointers on body alignment. Even so, a beginner who does not know his body well enough and is not aware of its correct position can suffer injuries/strains or even more serious problems in the long run.
That is why I think that especially for a beginner, it is ideal to go to Yoga classes face to face, to have the opportunity to be corrected and adjusted correctly by the teacher, if of course he accepts and wants.
I always tell my students to differentiate between that good pain that you feel when a muscle, tendon, joint is stretched, pain that is also normal when you do certain asanas designed to stretch that area of the body, and that bad pain, like such as bone on bone, sharp pain that can quickly lead to injury and must be stopped immediately.
So, many times in Yoga asana, you will feel tension, pain, because the role of asanas is to release tension, to stretch, to strengthen the body, to make it more mobile, so you cannot do all these things without any tension unless you are extremely flexible, or you have been practicing Yoga/gymnastics, etc. for a long time, or you do not do a position correctly. But this tension helps you to evolve, to grow, in this way you feel that your body is making some changes, some beneficial efforts.
Un om cu un suflet imens și cu un dar minunat de a-ți atinge limitele și a te învața sa le depășești. E de ajuns sa mergi la o singura clasa de-a ei ca să îți dai seama ca vrei continui tot cu ea. Much love!
